Marc H. Ferrer, RA, Director of Laboratory Planning & Design - Francis Cauffman
Mr. Ferrer is a registered architect with 28 years of professional experience in large & small scale projects. He has been a leading expert in
laboratory planning & design for the last 21 years. He brings to his clients a depth of knowledge spanning all sectors of science & technology
projects as a planner, programmer, designer and project architect on many major research facilities nationally and internationally for corporate,
governmental and academic clients. He guides the scientific users through the planning, programming & design process as an advocate
for creative scientific environments, promoting innovation, productivity & safety. His experience includes research laboratories, animal,
high-containment, scale- up and clinical facilities. He has published and presented in numerous national periodicals and conferences as l
eading expert in vivarium and high containment facilities.
Paul Fuson PE, Sr. Product Managerfor Life Sciences and Critical Enviornments, Siemens Building Tehcnology
Since joining the company in 1984, Paul has held positions in purchasing, product development, marketing and sales management. Paul’s
earliest work experience was as a design engineer and project manager for a manufacturer of nuclear and gas turbine power generation
systems. He holds Bachelor of Science degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Physics from the University of Illinois, and a Masters of
Management degree from Northwestern University.
Matt Gaedtke, ME - Sales Marketing Manager, Centrifugal and Industrial Fans - Greenheck Fan Corporation
Matt has over 12 years of HVAC experience with Greenheck Fan Corporation. Along with providing technical support to owners, engineers and contractors
on the selection and use of Greenheck’s commercial and industrial products, Matt also plays an active role in developing new products and training customers
on latest ventilation technology. He has conducted numerous presentations on Fan Fundamentals, Sound, Vibration, as well as Laboratory Exhaust Ventilation.
Matt graduated from the UW Madison in 1994 with a BS in Mechanical Engineering and completed his MBA through UW Oshkosh.
F. Kurt Last - President, Specialty Operations Solutions, Inc.
Mr. Last has more than 20 years experience in programming, design, commissioning and operating laboratory, cGMP pharmaceutical manufacturing
and research animal care facilities. Prior to founding Specialty Operations Solutions (SOS) in 1997, Mr. Last was Senior Director of Operations for a
cGMP biologics manufacturing company, leading teams charged with Facilities (Research & cGMP Manufacturing) Operations; Calibration &
Metrology; Research Animal Care and Security, Environmental Health & Safety. SOS provides programming, design, financing, sciences integration &
quality assurance, veterinary & research animal care support, complete (FDA) regulatory services, commissioning & start up, and operations.
William Lefebvre, Business Development Manager for the Life Science Center of Excellence (COE) - Gilbane Building Company
Bill has over 31 years of Construction Management experience, having spent 20 years working in the BioPharmaceutical and Biocontainment sectors. He is leader of Gilbane’s
LifeScience Center of Excellence, providing technical support and overview management for all of Gilbane’s LifeScience projects nationally. A shortlist of Bill’s recent projects
includes: Commissioning Director at Fort Belvoir Community Hospital, Ft. Belvoir, VA; Project Executive on Pre-Con team and Commissioning Director at Charles River Labs,
Reno, NV; Project Executive at Medical College of Wisconsin/Children’s Hospital Biomedical Research Facility. Milwaukee, WI.
Joe Phillips, AIA, MBA - Health and Science Practice Leader - Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, LLP (SOM)
Mr. Phillips is responsible for general management and advancing innovation
and design excellence for this respected international design practice.
Throughout his career, Mr. Phillips has generated significant growth for firms
serving healthcare and research organizations. He has been a leader on capital
projects worldwide for prominent research and healthcare enterprises and has
successfully executed senior management responsibilities over the course of
his 20-year career with top architecture and engineering firms. For 15 years
prior, Mr. Phillips was a scientist and operations manager responsible for
technology development and transfer for healthcare and science organizations
leading to the establishment of several successful healthcare service ventures.
He has served on the U.S. Green Building Council's Core Committee
responsible for the development of the LEED Application Guide for
Laboratories.
Mark Rahe, AIA, LEED® AP, Associate Principal – Perkins+Will
Mark has served as senior designer for some of Perkins+Will’s most complex teaching and research laboratory projects. Mark works directly with end users to
meet their present and future needs with innovative design solutions, and to coalesce their research missions and collective visions into world-class facilities.
He has a strong background in the development of construction documents, engineering systems coordination, and project management. Mark has also been
involved with managing many other project types including education, hospitality and aviation.
Krishnan Ramesh, PE, Principal –Affiliated Engineering Inc.
Krishnan Ramesh is the Managing Principal of the Metro DC office of Affiliated Engineers, Inc. (AEI). As a registered professional Mechanical Engineer with over 23 years
of experience, his career has focused on large-scale, complex research facilities for many of the country’s well-known institutions such as National Institutes of Health,
Memorial Sloan-Kettering, Johns Hopkins Hospital, the Medical College of Wisconsin and numerous federal agencies. Mr. Ramesh has extensive experience in planning,
engineering and design of research and development, institutional and healthcare facilities. His design experience includes hospitals, laboratories, vivaria, and central utility
plants.
Germain F. Rivard, DVM, PhD - MouseCare
Germain Rivard DVM, PhD, has extensive training and experience in laboratory animal science and medicine as well as animal
facility design and planning . Also, Dr. Rivard is a seasoned researcher who has attracted public and private investments, nearly
$8M for research & development involving engineering controls of barrier rodent facilities. Most recently, Dr. Rivard was awarded
a grant on energy-efficiency from New York State Energy Research and Development Authority [NYSERDA]: “Engineering
Controls Improvements of Barrier Facility for Rodent Production”. Also, he is currently the Director and a research faculty member
at Michigan Technological University where he has a research program on sustainable design and construction of vivarium. In
addition, Dr. Rivard is the owner of a consulting business called MouseCare and has published about energy-efficiency in rodent
facilities.
John A. Schaefer, MSF, CIH, HEM, CPEA – The Johns Hopkins University
Mr. Schaefer has thirty- five years experience in research, analytical laboratories and industrial hygiene twenty of those years with Johns
Hopkins University where he currently is the Associate Director of Health Safety and Environment. He serves as a member of the part-time
faculty as an Assistant Professor for Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Occupational Medicine and Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of
Public Health in Environmental Health Sciences. He is a certified Industrial Hygienist, A Certified Healthcare Environmental Manager and a
Certified Professional Environmental Auditor in Health and Safety. He has co authored over fifteen publications on topics related to
occupational safety.
Jeffrey Schramm, Vice President and District Manager Director of Federal Projects - Gilbane Building Company
Mr. Schramm is Director of Federal Projects in the Mid-Atlantic Region. He is responsible for providing sales support and operational oversight on projects under his control. Mr.
Schramm has worked in the construction industry for the past 27 years for Contractors, Architects, and Developers. He is a key member of Gilbane’s Health Care, Life Sciences
and Government Centers of Excellence which serves clients building health care, biocontainment, hi-tech laboratory, pharmaceutical and biotechnology facilities in the Private,
Public and University sectors. In his career, he has managed significant, high-profile projects for the USACE, NIAID, the NIH, DHS and the GSA, as well as numerous other
public sector, private Sector and University clients.
Jeffery W. Welter, LEED® AP – Principal Perkins+Will
Mr. Welter is a Principal in the Washington, DC office and leads the Science + Technology practice. With over 26 years of architectural, project management
and construction experience, he has led large multi-faceted and multi-disciplined teams. Worked on a variety of project types, including science & technology,
federal, corporate, commercial, healthcare, and high security. Mr. Welter is known for listening to client’s needs while working in collaboration with his
partners and project teams to create comprehensive and integrated project delivery. Mr. Welter has worked on the development and construction of numerous
highly technical projects with National Institutes of Health including Dale and Betty Bumper Vaccine Research Center, the Porter Neuroscience Research
Center, and the Integrated Research Facility at Rocky Mountain Laboratories. In addition to overseeing and managing projects.
Jon Zboralski - Director of Air Products - ThermoFisher Scientific
Mr. Zboralski has over 30 years experience in the design and development of laboratory furniture and fume hoods. Involved in the development of the
ASHRAE 110 tracer gas test. Serves on the SEFA Fume Hood Committee. He has published, author and holds numerous patents on airflow related
products.
